Rolls of honour like the Strathpine Honour Board give a ready insight into a locality's proud involvement in WWI. The honour board, designed by leading Brisbane metal worker Ernest Gunderson in 1921, lists in alphabetical order 76 names of local men who served in WWI. Some lettering is now missing, in its original state it clearly recorded whether a person was killed in action, wounded, died of illness or returned home. The honour board, commissioned by the Strathpine Patriotic League, is made of bronze on a marble background with timber edging. It features cavalrymen with the Queensland state emblem and soldiers; two enamelled flags- the Union Jack and Australian flag; the AIF emblem; a cannon and a replica of Britannia, with the words 'For king and country'. Gunderson's honour boards are unique to Queensland. Few remain as intact as this example, now found in the old foyer of the Pine Rivers RSL, now within the grounds of North Leagues and Services Club. Memorials to the district's servicemen in later conflicts are located nearby. The First World War Memorial Gates facing Anzac Avenue were relocated from the Lawnton showgrounds in 1985, and lead to a memorial garden containing two trophy guns.Mackay Tourism welcomes Strathpine Memorial Honour Board in Kallangur QLD, we offer an experience that takes you on a journey of a life time in Kallangur.
