The Thai name Lanna means “Land of a Million Rice Fields.” It is also the name of an ancient kingdom that once held sway in what is now Northern Thailand. Chiang Mai was the heart of the kingdom, which reached from Sipsonagpanna in the North to Tak in the South, and from the Mekong River in the East to the Salween River in the West.
